You need to make sure that each play is memorized by every player, and that they will feel comfortable executing their responsibilities come game day. Go over the plays at real speed in practice, and create a playbook for your players to study on their own time.

Teach your players how to conduct themselves professionally. The most successful players and teams are the ones who understand the value of sportsmanship, and who display respect for their competition. If you have respect for the game and the people you’re playing against, you’ll have no problem playing at your best. Don’t let your players think they are better than they really are.

Take an active interest in their lives. Often, a players’ ability to perform on the field is directly related to what’s going on in their personal life; you need to take an interest so that you can help be a coach both on and off the field when the time calls for it.

When you’re serving as a leader in a business setting, you need to trust your employees. Trusting your employees means that you don’t try to micromanage their daily responsibilities, but you give them the space to complete their projects on their own. Remain available throughout the day in order to answer questions, address issues, and keep minds at ease, but don’t abuse your power as the manager.

Motivation is a major part of your job as a manager, and it means that you have to get to know the people who work for you.
